Brake calipers act as a housing for the brake pads and sit over the brake disc so that a brake pad sits on each side of the brake disc. when the brake pedal is pressed it forces brake fluid from the brake master cylinder through the brake hoses and to the pistons in the brake caliper to press the brake pads on to the brake discs. This causes friction which slows down the vehicle and brings it to a stop.
